Com 12 Notes: Dec. 2, 2015

Debates! We'll likely do a couple more before Christmas break, so this is the first one to learn from. We'll be using a lovely rubric from a school called Winona. Today's topic is on coffee.

A debate can take many forms and structures. We'll be keeping this one nice and simple:

1. The "For" team will speak for 2 minutes.
2. The "Against" team will speak for 2 minutes.
3. We'll take a 5 minute break to discuss and plan rebuttal.
4. The "For" team will speak for 1.5 minutes.
5. The "Against" team will speak for 1.5 minutes.

For Project #12, here are the details:

1. Choose a food or a diet that does not have scientific consensus. For example: avocados, eggs, and wine are debated. Carrots and chocolate bars are not.
2. Find two articles, from reputable sources, that show different opinions on the health benefits of the food. I recommend googling "Health Concerns/Benefits of ____" and going to the "News" section. Remember to check the source: the best websites are large, trusted names, written by well-known, credentialed authors, and use sources that they cite and you can follow.
3. Write an expository essay explaining the debate about the food. In this essay:
-Describe the food or the diet
-Describe the arguments and key data from both articles
-Outline your own opinion on the food or diet
4. Include a "Works Cited" page, and use proper quotations.

Your assignment will be out of 30 (24 points based on the 6 point provincial rubric, and 6 points for proper quoting and citation format).
